Shedding Light in the Bedroom

Our lives just seem to keep getting busier and busier; from young families with children to dual income couples and retirees, we all want a quiet retreat at the end of the day. The bedroom is a place where we can finally get away from it all. Whether we invest in a cool new bed, mattress or high thread count sheets, it all helps to ease away the stress of everyday life.
If we are surrounded by luxury and an inviting atmosphere our blood pressure will automatically drop when we
enter the room (unless of course you have young children jumping up and down on your bed). Just like a beautiful hotel
suite, our master bedrooms can offer us that sense of relaxation as well as a sense of pride when we walk in.
Lighting is a key component in decorating any room. It is the finishing touch that gives the room its ambience.
The type of lighting in each room will be dictated by several factors. We need to know if there is any general, task or feature lighting required. Once we establish this we can then proceed to adopt the proper lighting to create the mood of the room. For instance, if someone loves to read in bed, we need to make sure we incorporate task lighting beside the
bed instead of general light. This can be accomplished by a swing arm lamp or a task lamp with an adjustable arm.
If you just want a soothing and serene atmosphere then I would suggest a pair of shaded lamps that feature a tri-light
function. Coupled with a soft lower wattage light, this will give the master suite a warm soft glow and therefor more
inviting. However, if there is no overhead general lighting ,you may want to increase the wattage in the lamps so you
can see your way clearly into the room after dark.
One of the most recent trends has been to hang a pendant or dining fixture in the ceiling of the bedroom
to create a very dramatic look. Obviously this can only be accomplished if you have 9 or 10′ ceilings. One thing
to consider if your bedroom heats up in the summer time is a ceiling fan with a lighting kit. This is often overlooked when
building or renovating but it can be essential in keeping your retreat a comfortable place at night. There are some
very cool modern fans with lighting kits out there. They can add a modern feel to your master suite whether in brushed stainless steel or high gloss white.
There are really no rules when it comes to lighting in the bedroom . The only thing I would suggest is to avoid
using the very cool white bulbs. Although they give a very bright white light, they can be hard on your eyes and give your room an uninviting appearance. Each bedroom should have exactly what the owner wants; whether it be a place to unwind and read before bed or just a quiet spa like retreat.
Light the way!
